When kids doodle, they’re not just making random lines. They’re exploring ideas, expressing emotions, and unlocking their imagination. It’s a safe space to experiment without worrying about “mistakes.” That freedom fosters creativity, problem-solving, and confidence. This is why teaching kids to doodle is such an important part of your art lesson.
Doodling also helps kids process information. Studies show that doodling can improve focus and memory, so those little drawings in the margins of a notebook might actually be helping your child concentrate better!

Teaching Kids to Doodle – Easy Steps
Teaching kids to doodle is less about drawing perfectly and more about giving them freedom to explore lines, shapes, and patterns in playful ways. Doodling can spark imagination, build confidence, and even help with focus. By guiding children with simple steps, you can show them how to turn basic marks into fun creations while encouraging creativity and self-expression.
This is one way that I use to teach kids to doodle, after of course paying homage to the Doodle King himself, Mr. Doodle.
Step 1: Start Simple with Shapes
Doodling begins with the basics shapes and objects. Shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and lines form the foundation of almost every doodle. When kids see how these simple forms connect, they start to realize that drawing isn’t as intimidating as it seems.
Draw 3 objects in a space (they should be close-ish together, use a couple of fingers as a way to measure)

Step 2:
Now draw more imaginative objects/characters squeezed into the spaces. It’s a really good idea to turn your paper in all directions to “see” what some of the spaces might turn into.

Step 3:
Fill in any gaps with squiggles, lines or shapes. If your kids get stuck and don’t know what to doodle, click Doodle Ideas for a free resource which just sparks their imagination!

So next time you see a child doodling, don’t dismiss it as idle drawing. Celebrate it! Grab a pen and join in, because those “just scribbles” could be the start of something amazing.

Conclusion
Doodling is one of the easiest and most joyful ways to spark creativity in kids. By starting with simple shapes, patterns, and playful prompts, children quickly learn that drawing doesn’t need to be perfect to be fun.
The more they practice, the more confident they become in expressing themselves through art. Most importantly, doodling teaches kids to see possibilities everywhere, turning lines, letters, and little mistakes into something imaginative.
Encourage them to keep a doodle journal, try new tools, and celebrate every scribble. Over time, these small drawings will grow into big bursts of creativity.
